How To Get To Mayne Island
Getting to Mayne Island is both easy and scenic. BC Ferries provides regular service from Vancouver’s Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal and Victoria’s Swartz Bay Terminal. The journey takes about an hour and a half from Vancouver and around 45 minutes from Victoria. The ferry ride itself is an experience, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding Gulf Islands and the possibility of spotting marine wildlife like seals or even orcas. It’s advisable to book your ferry ride in advance, especially during peak travel seasons.
Things to Do on Mayne Island
Explore Nature at Bennett Bay Gulf Islands National Park
Bennett Bay Gulf Islands National Park is a must-visit if you’re a fan of coastal hikes and breathtaking ocean views. Located on the east side of Mayne Island, this park offers a scenic trail that meanders along the shoreline. Even though there are many hikes around Vancouver, this is a different type of trek. It’s an easy hike perfect for beginners and families, with plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife such as seals, otters, and various bird species, if you are into birdwatching. The trail leads you to Campbell Point, where you can soak in the stunning panoramic views of the Salish Sea. This was one of my favorite places that I visited – and the pictures don’t lie.
Discover the Beauty of Edith Point
Another fantastic spot for nature lovers is Edith Point. This beautiful area on Mayne Island is known for its lush forests and rocky shorelines. The trail here is a bit more rugged, and about a 5 km round trip, making it perfect for those who enjoy a bit of adventure. Along the way, you’ll encounter views of the surrounding islands. I found this spot to be incredibly peaceful—it’s the perfect place to unwind and connect with nature providing a more secluded experience compared to other spots on the island. Night visits are always a treat!
Shop Local at the Mayne Island Farmers Market
For a taste of the local culture, don’t miss the Farmers Market, open on Saturdays from 10 AM to 1 PM from the 3rd Saturday of May through to the Saturday of the Thanksgiving long weekend. Make sure to get there early, as the best items tend to sell out quickly!

Also open on Saturdays from 10 AM to 1 PM, this little shop is packed with a variety of items, from vintage clothing to home decor. It’s a fun place to browse, and you never know what treasures you might find. Plus, shopping here supports the local community, which is always a bonus.
Visit the Public Beach at Kippen Road
Head to the public beach at the end of Kippen Road. This beach is a local favorite. It’s a great spot for a swim or just lounging in the sun. The beach is usually not crowded, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. For a special treat, visit the area around sunset for an amazing view. Can you tell me did a bunch of night walks to catch the water after sunset?
Experience the Serenity of the Japanese Memorial Garden
A beautiful spot on Mayne Island is the Japanese Memorial Garden. This tranquil garden was created to honor the Japanese-Canadian community that once thrived on the island. It’s a peaceful place to reflect and enjoy the beauty of nature, with winding paths, koi ponds, and traditional Japanese landscaping. The garden is especially beautiful in the spring when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom.
Play a Round of Disc Golf
If you’re looking for a fun and active way to spend an afternoon, try your hand at disc golf on Mayne Island! Mayne Island has a great disc golf course that’s free to use and open to all skill levels. The course winds through the forest, offering a mix of open fairways and challenging wooded areas. It’s a great way to explore the island while getting some exercise and having fun!
Visit Lighthouse Point
A trip to Mayne Island wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Lighthouse Point. This scenic spot is home to the historic Georgina Point Lighthouse, which has been guiding ships through the Gulf Islands since the late 1800s. The lighthouse is not open to the public, but the grounds are a great place to explore. You can walk along the rocky shore, watch for passing boats, and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding islands.
Water Activities
Mayne Island’s coastline is dotted with coves and beaches perfect for exploring by kayak or paddleboard. Rentals are available on the island, making it easy to get out on the water. Paddling around the island provides a unique perspective and a chance to see marine life up close. The waters are generally calm, making this a relaxing and enjoyable activity for all skill levels.

Whether you’re in the mood for seafood or a hearty burger, you’ll find something to satisfy your cravings. Don’t forget the amazing views!
Grab a Bite at Smoke and Thyme Food Truck
For a quick and tasty meal, check out the Smoke and Thyme food truck. This popular spot offers a variety of smoked meats, sandwiches, and sides, all made with local ingredients. The portions are generous, and the flavors are incredible. I highly recommend trying the pulled pork sandwich—it’s smoky, tender, and packed with flavor. Perfect for a casual lunch on the go.
Enjoy a Treat at Sunny Mayne Bakery Cafe
No visit to Mayne Island is complete without a stop at the Sunny Mayne Bakery Cafe. This local favorite is known for its delicious baked goods, including fresh bread, pastries, and cookies. They also serve great coffee, or chai lattes, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing breakfast or afternoon treat. It is so good that we went there two days in a row!

Tru Value Foods and Miners Bay Trading Post
Due to a limited number of places to eat on the island, you probably want to ensure you stay at a place with a kitchen. There are two grocery stores – Tru Value Foods and Miners Bay Trading Post that both provide all the options you would need while you are visiting Mayne Island.
NOTE: Mayne Island does not have a pharmacy, so it’s important to bring all essential medications and a first aid kit.
Accommodations on Mayne Island
Mayne Island Resort
The Mayne Island Resort is a top choice for those looking for comfort and convenience. Located with stunning views of Bennett Bay, the resort offers well-appointed rooms with easy access to all the best spots on the island. Guests can enjoy amenities like an indoor pool, hot tub, and spa, making it a great place to relax after a day of adventure.
The resort’s waterfront cottages are fully self-contained, featuring a living/dining area, a fully equipped kitchen, a king bedroom, and a private terrace with outdoor furniture and a barbecue grill.
Note: If you plan to stay here, or visit the Bennett Bay Bistro, be advised that your cellphone signal will roam onto a US network. So make sure you have a plan that covers the US, or call your mobile provider afterward and they will credit you back the roaming charges. That’s what I did!
Blue Vista Resort
For a more rustic experience, check out the Blue Vista Resort, a family-owned and operated retreat that offers charming cabins surrounded by nature. It’s perfect for those who want a “cabin in the woods” feel while still being close to the island’s main attractions.
Cabin Rentals
If you could believe it, the above two are the only ‘resorts’ on the island! Your best option otherwise is to find a home rental. There are many options and I highly recommend checking VRBO for great deals on beautiful places, depending on your budget.
