How to Spend 4 Days in Anchorage: The Perfect Itinerary
Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, is packed with activities for adventurers, wildlife lovers, and even solo travelers. Whether you’re planning your 4 days in Anchorage itinerary for stunning views, cultural experiences, or mouthwatering cuisine, this guide has you covered.
Did you know that only 15% of Alaska is accessible by highway? With so many activities outside of Anchorage, like starting hiking in Denali National Park or sea kayaking in Seward, the options are endless whether you stay in Anchorage or venture out into the wilderness.
I recently spent 4 days in Anchorage and crafted this itinerary based on my personal favorites. There are many things to do in Anchorage and surrounding areas, but this will help you plan if you have a short visit. It’s designed for those who love nature, great food, and unforgettable experiences.

Day 1: Exploring Downtown Anchorage
Start your Anchorage adventure by diving into the heart of the city. Anchorage’s downtown is small but vibrant, making it easy to explore on foot.
Anchorage Museum
I’ll admit, museums aren’t usually my cup of tea. But the Anchorage Museum completely shattered my expectations. This museum offers a captivating journey through Alaska’s history, art, and culture, all housed in a stunning architectural setup.
The exhibits are interactive and engaging, making it easy to lose yourself in the stories they tell. From Alaska Native artwork to the state’s natural history, the museum offers a well-rounded perspective on Alaska’s unique character.
The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The hours are extended to 9:00 PM on the first Friday of the month, and admission is free after 6:00 PM.

Alaska Native Heritage Center
A short drive away, this center brings Alaska’s Indigenous cultures to life. The ANH center offers a glimpse into the traditional ways of life of Alaska’s 11 distinct cultural groups. I loved learning about the traditions and storytelling of Alaska’s Native peoples.
Explore the beautifully landscaped grounds with authentic dwellings representing Alaska’s diverse regions. Inside the cultural exhibits, you’ll discover traditional artifacts, clothing, and tools. Be sure to catch a live cultural performance like storytelling or dance to truly connect with Alaska Native heritage. The center also offers workshops and demonstrations throughout the day, providing a deeper understanding of Alaska Native arts and crafts.
The Alaska Native Heritage Center is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Dinner: Glacier Brewhouse
Grab a table at Glacier Brewhouse for fresh Alaskan seafood and local brews. Their food and drinks are great! I liked it so much, I went there twice! Make sure you make a reservation or be prepared to wait for a table.
Next on your day of exploring is a half-day tour to visit Robben Island to learn more about the city’s history and where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. This boat ride and tour are full of excitement that should be included in your visit.
Once you are done exploring, head into town and visit the V&A Waterfront, a bustling harbor with shops, restaurants, and the Two Oceans Aquarium. End your day here relaxing after a great day of exploring. There was so much to see and experience there!
Day 2: Wildlife and Mountains
Anchorage is surrounded by natural beauty. On your second day, get closer to Alaska’s iconic wildlife and breathtaking landscapes.
Alyeska Mountain – Aerial Tram
Look no further than Alyeska Resort for a dose of breathtaking scenery or a thrilling winter adventure! Nestled amidst the Chugach Mountains, this world-renowned resort offers a unique experience perfect for both summer and winter travelers.
Skip the hike and indulge in a scenic gondola ride up Alyeska Mountain. The Alyeska Tram, takes you 2,300 feet above sea level, offering unparalleled panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, assuming the weather cooperates! As you ascend, keep your eyes peeled for glimpses of glaciers, and endless stretches of Alaskan wilderness.
In summer, marvel at the mountains, forests, and glaciers. Capture breathtaking photos, explore hiking trails, or simply relax and soak in the fresh mountain air.
In the winter, Alyeska transforms into a skier’s paradise. The tram provides convenient access to various slopes, catering to all skill levels. Powdery slopes with breathtaking views are your backdrop – an experience that will leave you wanting more!

Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center
During my 4 days in Anchorage, one of the most heartwarming experiences I had was visiting the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. This sanctuary is a haven for injured, orphaned, and abandoned Alaskan animals.
The center aims to rehabilitate animals whenever possible and release them back into the wild. They also provide a permanent home for animals who cannot be released due to permanent injuries or disabilities.
You can observe many of Alaska’s iconic wildlife, from majestic bears to graceful moose and reindeer. Witnessing these animals up close was a truly unforgettable experience. If you’re an animal lover like me, visiting the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is a must. It’s a chance to connect with Alaska’s incredible creatures, learn about conservation efforts, and create lasting memories.

Dinner: Mooses Tooth Pub & Pizzeria
Moose’s Tooth Pub is a true Anchorage institution. This lively pub boasts a legendary reputation for its creative and delicious pizzas. The outdoor patio, complete with a cozy fire pit, creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for enjoying a pint of local craft beer and soaking in the Alaskan vibe.
And trust me, the pizza at Moose’s Tooth is truly amazing!
Day 3: Scenic Views and Adventure
It’s time to head further out of town for another amazing adventure. Drive along Turnagain Arm for more stunning scenery as you head towards Whittier.
Drive Through Anton Anderson Tunnel
Before you head out on the water for an amazing day of exploring, you get to experience the 2.6-mile tunnel, North America’s longest rail tunnel, and is the only way to reach Whittier by land. Make sure you plan your trip as there is a schedule to adhere to. It is one-way and used for cars and trains.
Whittier is a little town nestled at the end of a fjord, known for its unique history as a former military base and stunning natural beauty, and is the closest port to Anchorage if you arrive via a cruise.
Explore Prince William Sound
It’s time to head out on the water. Take a 3.5-hour boat tour with Lazy Otter Charters. Explore Prince William Sound and Blackstone Bay. You’ll see glaciers, waterfalls, and wildlife.
You might spot whales, sea lions, otters, and an abundance of seabirds (puffins are a sight to behold in summer!) If you are into birding, there is also a chance to see Black-legged Kittiwakes at the right time of year. Make sure you take a good camera with you for the amazing scenery you will see.
I promise it will be worth it! This unforgettable experience is a must-add to your 4 days in Anchorage itinerary.
Potter Marsh Sanctuary
Once you’ve explored the waters and are heading back towards Anchorage, it’s time to get into nature just a little bit more. If you’re a bird lover like me, Potter Marsh is a haven for birdwatchers. Located at the southern edge of the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge, keep your eyes peeled for a variety of feathered friends, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot a moose!
Beluga whales can also be seen from the sanctuary, so keep your eyes on the water! Venture out on the boardwalks through the area and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
ALTERNATE OPTION
If you want a truly amazing experience, book the train trip on the Glacier Discovery Train. It will take you to Whittier via the train. Spend the day doing the charter tour and exploring the waters (or other activities) and then return by train in the evening. It was a highlight of my trip as the weather cooperated and the views were spectacular. If you choose to do this, you can visit Potter Marsh Sanctuary the next day.
Day 4: Relax and Reflect
Wrap up your 4 days in Anchorage with a slower-paced day to soak in the city’s charm.
Start your day with a stroll along 4th Avenue, browsing the unique shops for souvenirs and locally-made Alaskan crafts. Indulge in a sweet treat at Wild Scoops, where you can savor creative ice cream flavors inspired by the Alaskan landscape.
Earthquake Park
For a dose of history and nature, head to Earthquake Park. This unique park commemorates the devastating 1964 earthquake, showcasing the dramatic impact of this natural disaster on the landscape. Explore the interpretive displays and walk along the trails, gaining a deeper understanding of this significant event in Alaskan history.
Kincaid Park
Alternatively, spend the afternoon exploring the vast expanse of Kincaid Park. This expansive park offers a variety of trails for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing (in winter). Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife sightings, as moose and other animals are often spotted in the park. If you prefer a more relaxed pace, simply find a scenic spot to relax and enjoy the tranquility of the Alaskan wilderness.
Dinner: 49th State Brewing
End your last day with stunning views and good food. 49th State Brewing Company is a local favorite in Anchorage, known for its wide selection of craft beers brewed in-house and a menu featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Enjoy your meal on the rooftop patio with stunning views of the Alaska Range and Cook Inlet.
