Typical Day On A Safari in Tanzania: What to Expect

Experiencing a safari adventure is a dream for many, offering a unique glimpse into the wild beauty of Africa. From the majestic landscapes to the close encounters with wildlife, every moment is filled with wonder and excitement. Let’s delve into what a typical day on a safari in Tanzania looks like. This article is based off of my experiences in my 6 day safari through northern Tanzania.

No matter which safari park in Tanzania that you are exploring, a typical day on an African safari varies depending on the lodge or camp you choose, as well as the time of year. Some lodges offer a day that is broken up with time to relax in the afternoon. I found that a typical day on a safari in Tanzania is often a full day of exploring. I was able to experience both types of exploring in two different countries. You can read about my comparison between a safari in South Africa vs a safari in Tanzania for a full comparison.

MORNING EXPLORATION: Mid-Morning Adventures

A typical day on a safari in Africa usually starts before 8am. Depending on the lodge and time of year, your morning may start with a light breakfast and freshly brewed coffee or tea, or with a full hearty breakfast.

As the day starts in the African bush, the birds in Tanzania are starting to become active. It’s a prime opportunity to witness the wilderness stir to life, with predators on the prowl and herbivores beginning their daily rituals of grazing and foraging. Your chances to catch the Big Five are usually at its best in the early morning hours.

Some may opt for mid-morning game drives, setting out after a fulfilling breakfast, while others embark on full-day excursions, equipped with packed lunches for sustenance. Most of my days exploring the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater in the north and Selous Game Reserve in the south were full day excursions.

AFTERNOON: Explore, Lunch and Relaxation

A typical day on safari in Africa usually means a leisurely lunch back at your accommodation, followed by a well-deserved break during the peak of the day’s heat. Whether it’s lounging with a book, indulging in a siesta, or taking a refreshing dip in the pool if available, this interlude offers a chance to unwind and recharge for the adventures yet to come.

If you are participating in a full-day excursion, then you will have a packed lunch and stay out exploring. Be prepared for the heat! Luckily most of the safari vehicles have air conditioning, so you can stay comfortable.

LATE AFTERNOON ADVENTURES: Chasing the Sunset

Come late afternoon, the allure of the wilderness beckons once more. After a brief interlude, replenish your energy with snacks and tea, preparing for another exhilarating game drive. The late afternoon to early evening game drive promises encounters with a bustling array of wildlife. With dusk approaching, the savannah stirs to life once more, unveiling its nocturnal inhabitants. There’s no better moment to savor a sundowner amidst a waterhole.

If you were on a full day excursion, there is a high probability that you will not be out into the early evening, as your day will come to an end probably before sunset. You will then return to your lodge to relax and decompress from the memories of your day.

EVENING AMBIANCE: Sundowners and Dinner Delights

Returning just before darkness envelops the landscape, you’ll have ample time to freshen up, enjoy a pre-dinner drink, and relish an amazing meal. And I never had a bad meal; the food was always amazing. Now is also when you start to immerse yourself in the nocturnal sounds. It’s pretty amazing to hear hippos calling from the watering hole behind your lodge.

Share stories from the day and amazement in what you saw, before retiring to the comfort of your room for a well-deserved rest.

NIGHTTIME INTRIGUE: Nocturnal Safaris

Select lodges or camps offer the option of a nighttime game drive, an exhilarating opportunity to witness the bush come alive in a whole new dimension. Equipped with spotlights, you’ll venture into the darkness, uncovering the secrets of elusive creatures like the stealthy leopard or other nocturnal animals such as porcupines and genets. If you have the opportunity to do this, I highly recommend it, as it is an amazing experience.

Unfortunately this was not part of a typical day on a safari in Tanzania for me, as I was always partaking in full day excursions. I did however have an opportunity to experience this when I was on safari in South Africa.
